2014 Volkswagen Tiguan vs 2015 Audi Q3: Get the Right Crossover

Compact crossovers are some of the most popular vehicles among modern families. They are comfortable, spacious and stylish, which makes them much more attractive than minivans and less rugged than standard SUVs. So, when faced with a choice between two excellent luxury crossovers, like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q3, you may feel reasonably overwhelmed.

You may feel even more overwhelmed if you’re thinking of buying a used version of the Tiguan from 2014 or earlier. Does the old Tiguan stack up against the brand-new Q3? Let’s compare the two and see which one is better:

2014 Volkswagen Tiguan

2014 Volkswagen Tiguan

MSRP: $24,990

Though the Volkswagen Tiguan may not be the most aptly named vehicle in the world, it’s actually a very appealing overall. It looks good both inside and out, while offering solid fuel economy and potentially fun driving memories. The Tiguan’s biggest highlight is its relatively small size, which allows it to zip around narrow streets with the kind of nimbleness you’d expect from a hatchback. The only issue here is that it’s a little too pricy when compared to economy options like the Honda CR-V and not luxurious enough when stacked against upscale crossovers like the BMW X1.

WINNING ATTRIBUTES:

  • A solid 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.
  • A choice between a six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
  • More cargo room than in the Audi Q3, with 56 cubic feet of space behind the front seats.
  • All the buttons and functions are easy to find and use.
  • More pricing options – ranging from $25,000 to $38,000.

LOSING ATTRIBUTES:

  • The design seems to do its best to seem unremarkable; there isn’t a single feature that stands out.
  • Models priced similarly to the base Q3 lack standard features like a premium sound system, mirror memory, climate control and rain-sensing wipers.
  • Models priced similarly to the base Q3 also lack premium attributes like leather seats, seat memory and a power passenger seat.
  • The Volkswagen brand doesn’t boast the upscale image of Audi and BMW.

2015 Audi Q3

2015 Audi Q3

MSRP: $35,800

The 2015 Audi Q3 is a totally brand-new vehicle this year, which means that it’s yet to prove itself in a very competitive segment. The question is – does it? This luxury compact crossover delivers all the expected premium goods, with a relatively affordable price attached. Sure, it costs more than vehicles like the Honda CR-V, but in return you get an amazing ride quality, premium features and slick design. On top of that, you also get the status of driving an Audi, which may not seem like much, but trust us – people do take notice. In other words, you get what you pay for here here.

WINNING ATTRIBUTES:

  • A solid 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.
  • The design is for the most part understated, but its bright xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and prominent front grille make it stand out, while the tapered rear hatch and dual exhaust add a touch of sportiness.
  • The base model offers standard features like a premium sound system, mirror memory, climate control and rain-sensing wipers, all of which are absent in the comparable Tiguan trim.
  • The base model also comes with premium attributes like leather seats, seat memory and a power passenger seat.
  • The Audi brand serves up a more upscale image than Volkswagen or more affordable brands like Honda.

LOSING ATTRIBUTES:

  • Only one transmission choice available: a six-speed automatic.
  • Less cargo room than in the Tiguan, providing only 48 cubic feet of space behind the front seats.
  • Some of the buttons and functions can feel a little awkward, especially the inconveniently low temperature controls and restrictive sun visors.
  • Pricing options are lacking – ranging from $33,000 to $40,000.

Our review score: 8.6 / 10 (Read the full review)

WINNER: 2015 Audi Q3

REASON: Despite being more configurable than the Audi Q3, the Volkwagen Tiguan just doesn’t quite deliver the same premium feel. On the other hand, Audi’s compact crossover boasts better looks and more upscale features than any of the comparable Tiguans, while costing roughly the same amount. If you really want an entry-level luxury crossover, then you’re better off with the Q3.
