The 2014 Audi A4 is a delight of a vehicle, but let’s admit it: this car owes its success to what’s on the inside, not on the outside, and especially not to its lacklustre engine.
The 2014 Audi A4 has modest exterior design and an okay engine, yet it still manages to maintain popularity year after year. So, what makes this vehicle a hit amongst luxury car buyers? Well, we believe that it has a lot to do with the experience, look and feel of the cabin. The interior of the A4 will put any doubt of exterior flash or pony power to rest.
It Looks Okay, But…
Despite the fact that the Audi A4 sports decent exterior design that we would even call pretty, there is nothing overly exceptional about it. Ever since the split from its Volkswagen cousin, the Passat, back in the 90s, the A4 hasn’t made too many daring moves in terms of design. This means that this is a vehicle that actually looks somewhat out-of-date. On top of that, the core design has barely changed since 2009, with only a few slight updates between then and now – but nothing that will impress you. In other words, we are convinced that it’s not what’s on the outside that sells this baby, but it’s what’s on the inside. Cliché but true.
The Engine is Passable
As far as powertrains go, the 2014 A4 comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The performance is respectable, but as far 0-60 mph and top-speed go, the figures don’t compare to what’s on offer BMW and Cadillac. The Audi S4 is where the power is at, which gets a supercharged 3.0-litre V-6 engine with direct injection to produce 333 horsepower, but this puppy costs more, so keep that in mind!
Here’s What Matters: the Interior
So what’s on this inside of this little metal box? Well, what isn’t would be a better question. Once you get inside the Audi A4, any doubts or hesitations are immediately put to rest. The cabin of this vehicle tramps all the competition, including the venerable vehicle lineups like the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
Audi has a reputation for building some of the best cabins available, and the A4 is a testament to that. Soft-touch materials cover most of the cabin’s surfaces, while leather upholstery graces all the seats.
The design of the cabin is purposeful yet still relaxing. It is an upscale space that has been impeccably conceived from top to bottom. However, it is the fine details that set this cabin apart. From the aluminum or wood trim to the LED accent lights – not a single detail has been left out. Sitting inside the Audi A4 will make you forget of any of concerns you may have had with the exterior look or the lacklustre engine.
But Wait, There’s More!
The technology in the A4 is also a standout in the class. Audi’s Multi Media Interface (MMI) is the infotainment system that takes care of all of the information and entertainment functions in the A4. The system is made up of a small control knob surrounded by buttons that control all of the menus as well as the central screen. The system is pretty simple to use, although there is a bit of a learning curve to the whole process. With the MMI Navigation Plus system installed, the A4 can actually become a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight wireless devices. It also includes Sirius XM live traffic, Google Earth and Google Voice local search. Driving in the A4 is almost like driving in a large computer when fully equipped with all of the right technologies.
The Audi A4 is a vehicle built for those who appreciate fine interior space. It may not be the flashiest car on the outside or most powerful in the Audi lineup, but the onlookers judging from the outside won’t have a clue of the true luxury on the inside. Sitting inside an Audi A4 will give you every reason to put your pen to paper and purchase this car today.
