An advertisement for the Dodge Charger R/T takes a few light jabs at the Volkswagen Passat to promote the new sedan.
In a version dubbed “Just Kidding,” the camera enters a Granite Metallic Chrystal Charger from behind as sits idling at a red light, while a narrator describes several of the vehicle’s key features before making a joke.
“Here it is,” the voice says, “the 470-horsepower, Hemi-V8, butt-kicking, Mötley-Crüe-blasting Volkswagen Passat… Nah, just kidding, it’s a Charger.”
The engine then roars to life, and the car takes a rip around empty streets as Mötley Crüe’s “Kickstart My Heart” plays in the background.
Dodge has released only one visual sequence to promote the vehicle and several voice-over narrations, all of which comment on the Passat.
Yhis isn’t the first time Dodge has taken the opportunity to poke fun at Volkswagen. When FIAT-Chrysler announced its five-year plan in May, Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis took a few jabs at the Passat too.
“We are willing to bet, no kid ever grew up with a poster of a [Volkswagen] Passat on his bedroom wall,” he said. “We build modern performance cars.”
Passat owners shouldn’t be too upset about this though. The Volkswagen sedan gets great gas mileage at an affordable MSRP, and it’s an IIHS Top Safety Pick. It also happens to be built by the automotive company that is nipping at the heels of Toyota for the largest automotive company in the world.
