Let’s Compare Cars: 2014 Acura TL vs 2015 Acura TLX

Just because a car is new, it’s not necessarily better than its predecessor – though we certainly hope it’s true in most cases. However, the possibility is still there. That’s why we decided to examine how the 2015 Acura TLX stacks up against the 2014 Acura TL, both of which are to some degree a variation of the same vehicle – though the TLX is actually a combination of the TL and TSX.

So, without further ado, let’s see how the two compare:

2014 Acura TL

2014 Acura TL

PROS

  • Bigger and more powerful engine in the form of the 3.7-litre V6, which can produce 305 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
  • Lavishly-appointed and spacious cabin.
  • Technical and Advance packages with plenty of high-tech goodies like a navigation system, rearview camera, keyless access and more.
  • Available six-speed manual transmission.
  • HID headlights and fog lamps.

CONS

  • Average fuel economy, with better results to be found in the TL’s rivals.
  • The base MSRP of $43,590 is a bit too high.
  • “Robotic” exterior design may be off-putting to some.
  • No remote start.

2015 Acura TLX

2015 Acura TLX

PROS

  • Selection of all-new automatic transmissions – nine-speed and eight-speed dual-clutch.
  • Technical and Advance packages offer even more high-tech goodies than the TL, including navigation with 3D view, real-time traffic, AcuraLink infotainment, Acura/ELS Studio audio system with 10 speakers, HD Radio and so on.
  • Better fuel economy than in the TL.
  • Relatively low base MSRP of $41,690.

CONS

  • Exterior design may come off as too aggressive for some buyers.
  • Fuel economy is still average when compared to the competition.
  • No manual transmission.
  • Cabin space isn’t quite as roomy or luxurious as in the TL.

Verdict: The 2015 Acura TLX offers newer tech features and better transmission choices for a smaller price. Both cars are good overall, but the upcoming model does have an edge over its predecessor in several key areas – which is exactly what we expect from newer cars.
