Electronic dance music producer Deadmau5 teamed up with taxi-alternative company Uber to offer rides to Torontonians last Wednesday – in his McLaren 650S.
Deadmau5 took to social media to blast his one-night change of careers to a cab driver, tweeting, “in toronto? need a lift? I’m working for @uber tonight, downtown toronto. get lucky.”
The EDM producer took various locals from point A to point B, and they were not disappointed. “Thanks to my @Uber_TOR driver @deadmau5 for the awesome cab ride in Toronto tonight!” one client tweeted. “The McLaren was puurrrfect! :)”
With the McLaren 650S setting buyers back by about $300,000, it’s no wonder that so many customers were appreciative of the ride.
This isn’t the first time that Deadmau5 has taken to the streets of Toronto to offer rides. The DJ has a series of “Coffee Run” videos where he roams around Toronto to get Tim Horton’s coffee for various celebrities, including one with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.
Operating in over 205 cities, Uber also launched its low-cost uberX service in Toronto earlier this week. The new component of the business matches riders with drivers who use their personal vehicles to give rides, which costs about 40 per cent less than regular taxi fare. Any driver who meets Uber’s safety standards and passes the company’s background check can join the uberX service.
There is, however, some contention about the legality of this service that the City of Toronto is looking into.
