The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible is here and it’s just as obsessively concerned with its weight as the coupe model. Traditionally convertibles weigh more than coupes due to the top mechanism and various structural enhancements to make it stand. Thanks to the incredibly stiff aluminum frame, there’s no need for that extra bracing, which makes this convertible almost as light as its coupe counterpart.
Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter says that this kind of structure hasn’t been possible to create until recently. “The frame for the Z06 convertible leverages advancements in computer-aided engineering, metallurgy and manufacturing techniques, many of which were not available just five years ago,” he said.
Other things to watch out for in the new Corvette are a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine and a seven-speed manual transmission.
The coupe version has been a very strong competitor to the Dodge Viper and Ford Mustang for years now – and this one should be impressive too.
