Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus will launch an all-new safety package for all of its models starting in 2015.
Dubbed “Lexus Safety System+,” the package will include newly-developed active safety features that will help prevent or reduce collisions across a wide range of vehicle speeds. The Japanese automaker says that the technology is ready to be introduced next year and will make its debut across all Lexus models in Japan, North America and Europe by 2017.
The technology uses millimetre-wave radar with a camera and will include features such as a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection function, lane departure alert, automatic high beams and radar cruise control.
Each feature has its safety benefits not only for the Lexus occupants, but for everyone else. The lane departure warning system will alert drivers if a lane change is unsafe or obstructed, while the pre-collision system will help prevent or reduce potential crashes. The automatic high beams will ensure that the road ahead is brightly lit and visible during nighttime driving. Finally, the radar cruise control will allow the vehicle to maintain smooth acceleration and deceleration while using cruise control to keep a safe distance between vehicles.
There have been several new safety technologies revealed by a variety of brands this year, including the eye-tracking safety technology from General Motors and “world-first” safety features from Volvo.
Lexus has also been recently involved in a recall of 19,000 vehicles in Canada due to a dangerous fuel leak – though no injuries have been reported.
